CEO Pete Johnson has done a lot for his Helena and Montana communities, but he’s most proud of co-founding the Swish Basketball tournament. What started as a small two-day tournament for youth basketball teams in Helena now has dozens of participants from around the state and brings great business to Helena’s hospitality industry every year.
Pete has always been a patron of basketball in Helena, finding it to be a great way to help people stay active as well as bringing commerce to the city.
“At first,” he said, “it was a very small operation.” Co-founders like himself would be on the ground during the tournaments, helping to sell tickets or getting snacks and drinks for coaches and volunteers. It was a team effort, in every sense of the word.
Now, the Swish Basketball tournament has been held for 25 years and is a favorite annual event among locals. Participants, parents and community members alike get excited for the tournament and look forward to it year-round.
When asked what makes basketball so special to him, Pete said, “That’s the funny part—I don’t even like basketball. My kids did softball.”
It isn’t basketball specifically that makes the Swish Tournament so special for Pete; it’s knowing that he’s brought something to the community that people want to be a part of, something that will leave a legacy.
